Summits
Plomb du Cantal 1858 m
The Plomb du Cantal, which is the highest point in the region, offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Massif Central. You can hike to the top either from Le Lioran ski resort or from Prat de Bouc mountain pass via the GR 4/400 trail (3 hours round trip) but you can also take the Plomb du Cantal cable car from Le Lioran resort. From the summit you can hike, mountain bike or paraglide down or discover other hiking trails.
Puy Griou 1609 m
One of the marvels of Auvergne volcanology with its phonolite cone, a volcanic rock that makes a musical tone when struck. You can hike from Le Lioran but also from Col de Font de Cère moutain pass, from Les Chazes or take the Rombiere chair lift (in July and August)
Puy Mary 1787 m
You can reach the Puy Mary via the Pas de Peyrol (1588 m) mountain road, located in the heart of the Monts du Cantal natural reserve. A one hour walk (round trip) will allow you to discover the larger strato volcano in Europe.
Valleys
Vallée de l'Alagnon
In this magnificient glacial valley you can observe volcanic necks such as the Rocher de Laval (Neussargues), basaltic cliffs and beautiful waterfalls such as the one at Chambeuil (Laveissiere) and a river, the Alagnon whose source can be found at the Puy de Bataillouse at 1282 metres and where trails have been set up with spots for fishing grayling or brown trout.
Vallée de la Cère
The Cere River Valley is a magnificient trough-shaped valley. The source of the Cere river is at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal (1858 m) and from there this mountain stream flows down creating superb waterfalls. A rich agricultural site, the Cere river valley has a long tourist tradition that goes back to the days when people came to take the mineral waters of Vic sur Cere.
Typical Villages
Laveissière : Cradle of the Haut Alagnon
This village has all the features of a relaxing ans interesting place to discover, the house under the rock (private), medieval troglodyte caves, the Chambeuil mill, the ruins of the Bastide Combrelle castle ans the Maison du Buronnier.
Albepierre : Traditional mountain village.
Nestled at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal, between two glacial valleys, this village displays typical Auvergne mountain landscapes and architecture. The massive houses are built with stones from the nearby quarries at Cunes and the wood comes from the nearby forest. It has a rich cultural heritage : a fortified farm, aven, Roman roads and bridge. Its natural setting is unique : forest, Col de Prat de Bouc, Cirque de Chamalieres and the Lagnon Valley.
St Jacques des Blats :
This is the highest village of the Cere River Valley with a breathtakinf view of the Puy Griou (1694 m) and the Plomb du Cantal.
Les Gardes : Situated at an altitude of over 1100 metres, this hamlet is made up of block houses and traditional farms. Near on aratory chapel that has recently been set up you will find a 17th century stone cross with a bas relief crucifix.
Waterfalls
Cascade des Vergnes - Albepierre
A 30 minute walk will take you to this waterfall from the Pont de Fer.
(start between Albepierre and Prat de Bouc mountain pass)
Cascade de Chambeuil - Laveissière
A 30 minute walk from the hamlet of Chambeuil, where you can discover the Moulin de Chambeuil (mill) with your family.
Forests
Belles Aigues Forest - Laveissière
This forest cuts across the northern slope of the Alagnon Valley between Laveissiere and Le Lioran. It is a refuge for many animals : stags, roe dear and mountain sheep. Pine is the natural species of this forest and the most representative.
Bois des Carbonnières - St Jacques des Blats - Le Lioran
At just a stone's throw Le Lioran, its name is a reminder that, in the old days, charcoal was made from beech trees in these woods.
Forêt Domaniale de Murat - Albepierre Bredons
Covering a total of 1.000 ha, this forest is essentially a pine forest. Its principal vocation is the production of wood for carpentry and framework. It is full of game and if you are lucky you will be able to see does, stags, roe dear, boar, sheep fox and hare...and birds such as doves ans woodcock.
Art and Cultural Heritage
Croix de St Jacques des Blats
This cross has all the symbols of Saint James. It faces the church along the Via Averna, the way from Saint James that leads from Clermont Ferrand to Rocamadour.
Four des Gardes - St Jacques des Blats
This recently renovated oven has recovered its former charm. The area is worth visiting : panorama of the Cere River Valley and the village of St Jacques des Blats.
La Fontaine de Bredons - Albepierre Bredons
Be sure not to miss this fountain. This remarquable 16th century fountain can be found at the entrance of the village. It is classified in the supplemental inventory of Historic Monuments.
Maison sous la Roche - Laveissiere
At the heart of the village there is a house built under the rock (private home).
La Roche Percée - Laveissiere
